Raising children in Orange County is expensive. That’s why, when it comes to filing your taxes, it’s helpful to take advantage of free tax preparation and cash back tax credits. As a mom, here’s what you need to know about filing taxes this year:
Income Filing Requirement
While you may not have to file taxes if you made less than $19,400 in 2022, you may be eligible to claim cash back tax credits that can only be claimed by filing your tax return.
OC Free Tax Prep
If your household made less than $60,000, you may qualify to have your federal & state taxes prepared for FREE by an IRS-certified volunteer at an OC Free Tax Prep location near you. This program is offered by Orange County United Way and helped over 14,000 taxpayers last year!
Claim Cash Back Tax Credits
At OC Free Tax Prep, our IRS-certified volunteers specialize in helping moms like you get all the tax credits they are eligible to claim on their tax return. You MUST file a tax return, even if you made less than the filing requirement, to claim these cash back tax credits.
Earned Income Tax Credit
Every year, California leaves $2 billion in cash back tax credits called the Earned Income Tax Credit on the table. There is a federal Earned Income Tax Credit and a California Earned Income Tax Credit (CalEITC). To learn more about this credit, click here.
As of 2021, the CalEITC has been expanded to tax filers who use an ITIN and have young children under 6 years of age.
Young Child Tax Credit
If you are eligible for the California Earned Income Tax Credit (CalEITC) and you have children under the age of 6, you may be eligible for the Young Child Tax Credit.
