Volunteer Roles and Responsibilities

Whether you’re interested in preparing taxes, greeting clients, or interpreting, we have a role for you. Each role is crucial to ensuring quality service so that our clients receive the assistance they need.

Support the Site Coordinator with administrative tasks and other duties as assigned.

Required Certification Training:

  • Volunteer Standards of Conduct
    • Estimated Completion Time: 1 hour
  • Welcome taxpayers, help them sign in, and explain the site process.
  • Confirm the taxpayer has the appropriate identification and documents.
  • Provide translation between volunteer greeters, intake interviewer, tax preparer, quality reviewer (Interpreter only)
  •  

Required Training:

  • Volunteer Standards of Conduct
    • Estimated Completion Time: 1 hour
  • Intake/Interview & Quality Review Training
    • Estimated Completion Time: 20 minutes
  • Review intake forms and confirm clients have all relevant tax documents
  • Check to confirm that the tax return is within scope of the program
  • Determine the return’s complexity and assign it to the appropriate preparer
  • Help process taxpayers and flag any issues before tax preparation begins

  • Volunteer Standards of Conduct
    • Estimated Completion Time: 1 hour
  • Intake/Interview & Quality Review Training
    • Estimated Completion Time: 20 minutes
  • Prepare federal and state tax returns using the IRS approved software.
  • Apply tax law to determine if the taxpayer qualifies for credits like Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), California Earned Income Tax Credit (CalEITC), Child Tax Credit (CTC), and more.
  • Communicate with taxpayer to confirm additional information as needed.

Required Training:

  • Volunteer Standards of Conduct
    • Estimated Completion Time: 1 hour
  • Intake/Interview & Quality Review Training
    • Estimated Completion Time: 20 minutes
  • Tax Law Certification: Basic or Advanced
    • Basic Estimated Completion Time: 4 hours
      • If you’re going to take the Advanced Tax Law Certification you do not need to take the Basic Tax Law Certification.
    • Advanced Estimated Completion Time: 4 hours (recommended)
  • Optional Modules: Foreign Student, Puerto Rico, Military, International
  • Conduct thorough reviews of completed returns to verify accuracy and ensure they are free of errors.
  • Must be certified at the Advanced level or higher
  • Great for returning volunteers or those with prior tax preparer experience

  • Intake/Interview & Quality Review Training
    • Estimated Completion Time: 20 minutes
  • Tax Law Certification: Advanced
    • Estimated Completion Time: 4 hours
  • Optional Modules: Foreign Student, Puerto Rico, Military, International

Training and Support

No Experience? No problem! We provide comprehensive training and ongoing support to ensure you feel confident and capable no matter what volunteer role you choose.

All volunteers must complete certifications annually. All certification tests require a minimum passing score of 80%. If volunteers do not pass the first time around, they may take one retest.

Training options (only 1 required):

  • In-person: Three 6-hour classroom sessions (available November – December)
  • Live Zoom: Six virtual sessions (available November – December)
  • Recorded Zoom: Learn at your own pace (available in December)
